Book Launch, 3rd December 6.30-8.30pm

Join us at Birkbeck for the launch of Rhian Elinor Keyse, Adeline Moussion-Esteve and Emma Yapp’s new edited collection Sexual Violence in Medicine and Psychiatry: Addressing Harms Through Interdisciplinarity.

This book explores how medical and psychiatric knowledge, practitioners, and practices respond to sexual violence. It highlights how the medical and psychiatric fields often reproduce political and social dynamics of discrimination, othering, marginalisation, neglect, or surveillance, through their own sets of discourses and practices. Covering a wide range of geographical case studies including the UK, Australia, Kenya, and Argentina, this book is the first cohesive edited collection to unite interdisciplinary scholarship on this topic.

About the Editors

Emma works at the University of Bristol, researching sexual misconduct amongst powerful perpetrators. Emma’s research interests are focused on the relationship between medicine, psychiatry, and sexual violence; and their work sits at the intersection of feminism, socio-legal studies, and medical sociology.

Adeline Moussion Esteve is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow on the Recovery Histories project. She is a social anthropologist. Her work explores the social and political dimensions that shape the experience of violence, with particular attention to the material and everyday consequences of its aftermath.

Rhian Elinor Keyse is a Lecturer in Global Historical Studies at the University of Wales Trinity St David. She is a social and cultural historian of gender in modern West and East Africa, and her research focuses on histories of gender-based violence in Ghana and Kenya.

Guest speakers will be confirmed shortly.

The event is followed by refreshments and is free to attend. Please book your place here.
