Dr Joanne Wilson is a field research specialist with over 10 years’ experience leading and supporting sensitive research on child sexual abuse (CSA), sexual violence (SV), and inequalities affecting women and girls. She conducted the only UK primary research focused specifically on the experiences of Black African and African-Caribbean British adult victim-survivors of CSA.
Dr Wilson has led and coordinated research on racial, gender and class inequalities, political participation, sexual violence and child sexual exploitation, including work with Race on the Agenda (ROTA), the European Union, the Office of the Children’s Commissioner, Oxford University, PLAN UK, Solace Women’s Aid, Durham University and other specialist organisations. Her research has also included evaluations and equality impact assessments for public-sector organisations.
Her extensive experience working with women, girls and marginalised communities affected by racism, poverty, sexual abuse, exploitation and domestic violence has informed an inclusive and intersectional research approach. She has taught Community Psychology at the University of East London and Northumbria University and is currently a lecturer at Queen Mary University of London’s Wolfson Institute for Population Health.
